Can Progesterone be the problem with your hormones?

One of the most popular prescriptions that we are asked to prepare for patients is Progesterone.  Seeing that it is so beneficial for so many women, I thought I would let our expert on the subject discuss this powerful hormone in more detail.

Our hormone specialist and full-time staff RN, Anita Hester, answers the question that is so frequently asked:

Why is Natural Progesterone important?

Every day I talk to women of all ages who are experiencing symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mental fogginess, irritability and mood swings, to name a few.  These often indicate a progesterone deficiency.  Most women are deficient by the time they reach their mid-thirties and usually don’t connect their symptoms to this problem.

So what is progesterone?  It’s a hormone that is produced by the ovaries and is necessary for pregnancy.  Of course that’s not it’s only function.  Progesterone is important for protecting the brain, cardiovascular system, bones, breasts, and uterus.  Balancing the estrogen in a woman’s body is also a major function.  It helps prevent estrogen dominance which in turn decreases the risk for breast cancer, fibrocystic breasts, endometriosis and uterine fibroids.

The progesterone that I am describing is Natural Progesterone, not a synthetic progesterone (progestin). Natural progesterone is molecularly and biologically the same as the progesterone found in the human body.  It reacts with the hormone receptors in the body exactly as our own hormones.  However, synthetic progestins  (ex. medroxyprogesterone)  do not behave the same in our bodies because they are not the same as Natural Progesterone.  They do not provide all of the protection of natural progesterone and can actually cause a lot of side effects.  Synthetic progestins have also been linked to increased risk of breast cancer and heart disease. Every day I talk to women who have tried synthetic progestins and suffered miserable side effects.

Women suffering with PMS,  perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms (even after hysterectomy) can greatly benefit from supplementing with Natural Progesterone.  It facilitates the work of estrogen,  helps to elevate mood, reduce anxiety and irritability, and improve focus and concentration.  Natural Progesterone can alleviate hot flashes and night sweats, protect against uterine and breast cancer, build new bone, control migraines, normalize blood sugar levels, and much more.

I have used Natural Progesterone myself for over 7 years and it truly makes a difference for me.  It is always exciting to hear from other patients whose lives have also been changed dramatically by treatment with this important hormone.  Having your hormones in balance is the goal and in order to reach that goal it is essential to have hormone levels checked.  At the doctor’s office blood is drawn to check levels.  Another method is through saliva testing which is done in the convenience of your home.  It gives a more detailed account of how much of each hormone is actually available for your cells to use.  The saliva report also gives goal ranges for optimal health depending on your stage of life.  You can learn more about saliva testing by stopping by Regel Pharmalab or calling us.  We also have seminars to give you more insight on Progesterone and other hormones.  Click here to sign up for our next seminar.

I would love to help you feel your best and improve your quality of life with Bio-Identical Hormones.
