“I’m just not myself. Could it be my hormones?”

Have you been forgetting things, feeling exhausted, screaming at your family, or wanting to stick your head in the freezer because you feel like you are on fire?  Well you are not alone.  These complaints and many others are very common and most likely caused by hormonal imbalance.  We specialize in helping patients with these problems and our on staff RN/ Bio-identical Hormone Specialist, Anita Hester, is going to elaborate on how we can help you.

Our bodies depend on chemical messengers called hormones to perform certain tasks in keeping us alive and healthy.  The sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and cortisol) are made from pregnenolone which comes from cholesterol.  Male and female sex hormones are found in everyone but obviously the amounts differ depending on your sex.  Women have more estrogen and progesterone while men have more testosterone and DHEA. These hormones work with the thyroid hormones also to keep your body in balance.

If the delicate balance of these hormones is interrupted for any reason, your body makes you aware of it with a variety of symptoms.  Many people live with symptoms for years without realizing that what they are feeling signals hormone imbalance.  They may mention how they feel to their doctor and be given a prescription for an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety drug. These medications may temporarily cover some symptoms but do nothing to correct the hormone problem, and actually can cause a lot of side effects.

Some of the more common symptoms of hormone imbalance we hear about are hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, dryness, skin changes, anxiety, depression, mental fogginess, memory lapses, body aches, muscle weakness, fatigue, sugar cravings, weight gain, joint pains, and low sex drive.  There are many more and patients are often very surprised to find that what they just passed off as “getting older” is actually a lack of certain hormones.

As a hormone and nutritional supplement user myself I can tell you that it can be life-changing.  You can get back to feeling like yourself again by having your hormone levels checked and getting a customized recommendation for natural or Bio-identical hormone therapy.  We offer saliva testing which is an excellent way to determine exactly how much of the hormones in your body are available for use in your cells.  During your hormone consult we will discuss your test results, medical history and symptoms.  An individualized prescription for your specific needs will be developed and you will also receive a recommendation for nutritional supplements that are important for hormone balance and symptom relief.

Call or come by the pharmacy for more information about saliva testing and our Cool Ladies Club.  What are some symptoms you are experiencing?  Comment below
